New Hobbies to Start the Month

Over the past couple of years, many of us got used to spending more time at home. Even now, some of us still stick to a daily routine that centers around being at home almost the entire day.

When you’re so deeply acquainted with your home, there are times where it might feel a tad dreary. Practising a day-to-day routine may feel like life gets boring at times, and you start looking for things to freshen up your way of living. Some people reorganise their pantry, some people rearrange their furniture, some people find new games to play or shows to watch – the list is endless.

It’s time to find a new way to ignite your creativity, and entertain both your body and mind. Thankfully, there are plenty of things that you can do from the comfort of your own home, that don’t always involve scrolling social media or picking up a new Netflix series.

Check out our list of new hobbies you can try out to start your month!

Working Out

Why wait for the new year for the new you? Exercise helps to refresh your mind and body, and boosts your mental health. The best part is you can do it all from the comfort of your own home, while watching a Netflix series or blasting your favourite music.

Loads of fitness centres and gyms have stepped up to offer virtual workout programs, and if you’re not willing to pay for those, there are also free options on Youtube, Instagram and even Tiktok! Stick to a simple exercise routine to get your body moving for at least 20 to 30 minutes a day, and you’ll find that your health will indeed improve.

Learning How to Cook

This can be a challenge for cooks of every skill tier! If you’re new to cooking, go easy on yourself and start simple – make chilli oil noodles, fried rice, grilled cheese sandwiches and other easy recipes. If you’re already familiar with your way around the kitchen, branch out and tackle that one recipe that you’ve been putting off, or making that pastry you’ve been dying to master.

By learning and mastering new recipes, you’ll be able to grant yourself a sense of accomplishment that will boost your positivity! Additionally, it makes great social media content if you choose to share your journey with your followers.

Painting

A brush and paint can be quite the therapeutic experience! There’s just something about seeing a brush slide over your canvas, watching as the colours soak into the background and blend together. There’s just something about mixing paint together and watching the colours meld – that’s why there are hundreds of paint mixing videos on Youtube and Tiktok made by art enthusiasts.

If you’re totally new to painting and don’t want to butcher your work, grab a paint-by-numbers set with an image of your choice. If you’re a seasoned painter, maybe try out something new like digital art! There are limitless capabilities with digital drawing and painting, and all you need is a tablet and a pen.

Make Your Own Craft

Level up your crafting skills by making something from scratch, such as resin art, soap or candles! Soap, for example, is always a household necessity, and you can explore different textures, scents, finishes and colours. Imagine making a mint chocolate chip-scented soap that looked exactly like a chocolate bar, or a candle that looked and smelled like apples.

Order some supplies online, watch some tutorial videos and start experimenting with your craft. You might even be able to earn some side income, or have enough products to give as handmade presents for the next birthday or special occasion!

Photography

You don’t need a fancy DSLR or Fujifilm to try out photography, although chances are if you have one, it might be collecting dust, still waiting for you to take it on a trip abroad.

Smartphones nowadays have similar functions as DSLRs, such as aperture, shutter speed, ISO and exposure sliders that you can play on. Familiarise yourself with these terms and learn some new tips and tricks from Youtube or Tiktok, and get to snapping.

Journaling

It’s like writing a diary, but better! All you need is a pen and a notebook.

Writing about your day or saying whatever is weighing you down can be extremely therapeutic. There’s something special about writing down your thoughts and feelings on paper, rather than just posting rants and status on social media or a private Twitter account (we know, we do it too).

However when you write, you’re pencilling down your emotions and giving your brain new areas to think. It’s especially helpful on those days where you feel sad and empty, but don’t know why. When you look back on those pages, you can then feel a sense of accomplishment about how you’ve grown throughout the year.
