Four Flowers and Their Meanings

Flowers have been recognised as a language for centuries in many countries throughout Europe and Asia. They are even prominent in William Shakespeare’s works. Flower and plant symbolism can be found in the mythologies, folklore, sonnets, and plays of ancient Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, and Chinese cultures.

We’ve talked about some flowers and their meanings previously. Every flower has its own unique meaning or symbolism, and can be influenced by its variety and colour. Some flowers even take on new meanings based on the number given to someone. For example, a single daffodil is said to bring bad luck, while a bunch of them means good luck!

This time, let’s study the language of some lesser-known flowers that are commonly used in our favourite bloom boxes!

Eustomas

Eustoma, also known as Stock flower or Lisanthus, is a popular flower in the United States. The name was derived from the Greek words eu and stoma. Common names for the flower include Lisanthus, Prairie Gentian, Stock, Gillyflower, and Virginia Gilly flower.

Eustomas have flowers that grow up to 15-60 centimetres tall, and are known for their succulent bluish-green leaves. The flowers are available in white, pink, blue, purple, and yellow – perfect for flower arrangements like Simply Bloom’s.

These flowers have several meanings, with the most common one being an expression of love and contentment. You may gift your loved one a flower arrangement with eustomas on occasions such as Valentine’s, anniversaries or birthdays. Another few popular representations of this flower include appreciation and admiration, as well as friendliness, sweetness, and respect. Eustomas may be used to wish a person peace and happiness for a lifetime.

Additionally, different colours of eustoma also differ in meaning. Purple eustomas are symbolic of royalty and beauty while yellow means happiness and joy. White is associated with spirituality and to unity, purity, and innocence. Pink ones represent charm and romance, while orange ones are meant for friendship, joy, and happiness.

Veronica

Veronica – also known as speedwell – is a tough, beautiful plant that grows in difficult garden conditions all around the world. Due to the fact that it thrives despite drought or wet soil, it’s known to flower enthusiasts as a powerful symbol of endurance and toughness. Veronica is a classic garden flower that is closely related to snapdragons, foxgloves, and beardtongues. The pink-blue buds are commonly used as a filler or accent flower in floral bouquets. It is also available in shades of lavender and white.

Veronica carries the symbolic meaning of healing, recovery, and joy in the language of flowers. It has been used as a cure-all medicinal throughout the ages, hence the name speedwell. Its use as a healing herb dates back even further to ancient Rome!

Mattiola

The delicate flower Mattiola, commonly known as Stock, bears the name of Pietro Andrea Mattioli. He was a well-known botanist and physician who discovered many medicinal properties of certain plants. The plant is distinguished by its vibrant colours and strong fragrance, and is widely used as a filler for flower arrangements.

Matthiola mostly symbolises contentment, happiness, and joy. Yellow blooms represent happiness and joy, and are used for happy events such as graduations, celebrations and more. White flowers signify love and adoration, and are best for weddings and anniversaries. Red and pink represent love, passion and romance, which makes them perfect for proposals, first dates or any other romantic occasion.

A flower arrangement with matthiolas may symbolise a wish for a long life, or contentment in life. It may also refer to everlasting beauty and youth. More religious parties use matthiolas as a symbol of spiritual purity.

Hydrangeas

While undeniably beautiful, the hydrangea represents a wide range of emotions, from heartfelt emotion to frigidity and bad luck. Stories about hydrangeas have continued to pass down through time, and still hold plenty of meaning until today. According to legend, a Japanese emperor sent blue hydrangeas to the family of a girl he loved, in order to make amends for neglecting her.

At a surface level, hydrangeas represent gratitude, grace and beauty. It also represents bounty or abundance because of the number of flowers, and the rounded blooms. When giving hydrangea flowers to friends or family, choose the appropriate colour to avoid possible misunderstandings. Don’t worry though – we’ve got you covered!

Hydrangeas commonly come in shades of pink, blue, purple, and green. Pink is the most common one, and symbolises love and heartfelt emotions – some say that the blossoms even represent a heart! Blue ones are used for gratitude and understanding, and are always a way of admitting that you’re apologetic. White hydrangeas represent being boastful or braggy, and stems from Victorian times, when men gifted flowers to only women that they desired. Purple blooms are associated with pride, royalty and gratefulness, and symbolises that the giver desires to understand more about the recipient.
